Don Pieri is a regular at fishing Lake Baccarac in Mexico. He has made many trips south of the border and has a few photos featured on our Bragging Page. Don has agreed to share some of his experiences on fishing for these double digit bass in Mexico.
Lake Baccarac offers the finest Large Mouth Bass fishing in all of Mexico. The chance of catching a bass in excess of 10 pounds is very good in Lake Baccarac. An example of catches so far this year (2008) include 83 anglers catching 410 bass in excess of 8 pounds. There were 212 bass that weighed in over 9 pounds while 85 were over 10 pounds. Don has been the witness of approximately 1000 bass between 5 and 7 pounds taken from Lake Baccarac. This example is taken from just a total of 4 weeks of fishing this wonderful lake.
Lodging at Lake Baccarac is provided by picturesque Big Bass Lodge which offer the finest in accommodations including food, service and fishing. All rooms offer 2 double beds, air conditioning, full shower and bath with daily maid service. Packages include 3 meals each day, soft drinks, beer and water. Margaritas and served each evening. Guide service is provided by the most experienced guides on the lake. Big Bass Lodge provides transportation from Matzatlan to the lodge upon arrival. Gratuity for the staff members is not included in the package price.
Don suggests anglers bring their own fishing gear. He recommends anglers bring medium-heavy to heavy action casting rods with matching casting reels. Don says "I don't ever recommend bringing spinning gear for fishing Lake Baccarac. Most spinning gear is not capable of handling the big bass in this lake." Big Bass Lodge does provide tackle for anglers if they wish to use it but most anglers will be more happy with their own gear.
The most productive lures for these big mean bass are spinner baits, soft plastic, and top water baits.
Packages offered include both 4 and 6 day trips. Three day trips are available but can sometimes cause transportation problems. The transportation issues can be worked out but the 4 and 6 day trips seem to work out the best. Three day trips with days added on can also be provided.
